How we test and grade

Every item is tested before it’s listed, and every listing states exactly what was tested and what wasn’t. Here’s what that means.

Cameras

Shutter

Every shutter speed is tested by ear across the full range, and on film where the listing says so. We’re checking every speed, not just whether it fires. If a speed sounds slow, fast, or inconsistent, that’s disclosed in the listing.

Light seals

Every body is checked for light seal and mirror foam condition. Degraded foam is one of the most common sources of ruined film, and one of the most commonly overlooked in casual grading. Seals are replaced when needed before the camera ships.

Film advance and rewind

Advance, rewind, multiple exposure prevention: all checked by hand. If anything is stiff, sticky, or skipping, it’s noted.

Meter

Where the camera has a meter, we check its readings against the meter in a Nikon Z5 II under the same light. If the meter is dead or unreliable, that’s stated clearly in the listing, not buried.

Camera-specific faults

Before testing, we research the known failure modes for that specific model, check for them, and note any findings in the listing.

If we can’t fix a fault, we don’t sell the camera as working.

Lenses

Every lens is checked for:

  • Fungus: inspected with a light source through both elements
  • Haze or coating separation: noted if present, with an honest assessment of whether it affects image quality
  • Aperture blades: checked for oil. Oily blades cause soft, slow stops that affect exposure.
  • Balsam separation: noted in any lens where it applies
  • Focus and aperture action: smooth travel through the full range, with no stiff or grinding spots

Optical testing

Lenses in mounts we can adapt are optically tested on a Nikon Z5 II mirrorless body. Focus peaking and magnification let us check sharpness, decentering, and aperture behavior across the frame. Every listing states whether the lens was optically tested or visually inspected only.

Condition grades

We use the KEH grading scale, a widely used standard for used camera gear. KEH’s own definitions are on their grading system page; ours below follow the same intent.

Grades describe cosmetic condition. All items are tested and work as described unless the listing states a fault or the item is graded AI. UG items work but are cosmetically rough, and their glass may have marks, fungus, or haze that could affect picture quality. AI items are non-functional or damaged.

LN−

Like New Minus

Barely used. Wear, if any, shows only on close inspection. Glass may have light dust.

EX+

Excellent Plus

Lightly used. Limited wear, such as minor finish marks. Glass may have light dust.

EX

Excellent

Noticeably used, with average wear for its age. Glass may have some dust that won’t affect picture quality.

BN

Bargain

Well used, with above-average wear. May have dents or finish loss. Glass may have small marks or dust that should not affect picture quality.

UGSold as-is

Ugly

Working, but heavily used with extensive wear. Glass may have fungus, haze, or marks that could affect picture quality. Sold as-is with a full description.

AISold as-is

As Is

Non-functional or damaged. The listing states the specific fault clearly. Sold as-is.

Returns and warranty

Items graded LN− through BN are covered by a 14-day return window. The buyer pays return shipping on change-of-mind returns. UG and AI items are sold as-is, with no returns. If an item isn’t as described, we cover return shipping. Contact us before opening a case so we can make it right. eBay’s buyer protection still applies.

The listing description will state exactly what you’re getting.

Photos

Every listing includes photos of the actual item, not stock images. We photograph wear, marks, and anything notable. What you see is what ships.

If you ever have a question about a specific item that isn’t answered in the listing, ask. We’d rather you have the full picture before you buy.
